My Story:

From Physical Therapist to Caregiver Master Trainer

Hi Friend!

I'm Cheryl Foster, a physical therapist, mom, daughter of 3 aging parents with medical issues, and the Caregiver Master Trainer from Fort Mill, SC. I'm so glad you found us!

For years I went to school to become a physical therapist and worked my way up the healthcare ranks from staff clinician all the way to Administrator, Director, and Professor. I even consulted with companies and other healthcare professional groups to improve the care they provided.

But my real education, and what has made me the clinician I am today, wasn't learned in school or on the job. It was learned as a caregiver.

It started with Mom...

The day I got the call my mom needed emergency brain surgery changed my life. In an instant I went from caring for other people to caring for my own mom. I needed to pull myself from a place of fear and overwhelm into a place of action.

Then came Elizabeth

Less than a year after Mom's brain surgery, I gave birth to preemie twins. Elizabeth was born with a serious abdominal birth defect requiring 5 months in the NICU, countless surgeries, and around-the-clock care.

What they had in common

In both cases, my medical knowledge wasn't enough for the battles I found myself in. I was exhausted and afraid. Working in healthcare, I knew that things could go wrong.

People were caring for my Mom and Elizabeth- people who were fallible. And I couldn't be with either of them around-the-clock but needed to keep up with what was being done and the clinicians who were caring for them in order to catch oversights. But how?

My search for a better way

Having advanced training in geriatrics and neurology were a huge asset with my mom but proved useless when caring for Elizabeth. I didn't know the first thing about carrying for preemies!

I went to work reading large text books, consulting with experts, and speaking with other parents from around the world, trying to learn everything I could.

Once I understood the medical conditions, available treatments options, and possible complications, I was able to have meaningful conversations with her healthcare team and come up with ways of tracking the care they were providing.

Only then could I effectively advocate for Elizabeth and ensure she was getting the right care at the right time. I honestly could not say how many mistakes I caught with this method as she spent almost half of the first 2 years of her life in hospital but the number was significant.

I can say that each "near-miss" and incident (ie. mistake) with Elizabeth reinforced in me that errors are made all the time in healthcare and that a patient's best chance at a good outcome is having a knowledgeable and effective advocate.
